When we found out that our reservations at a nice hotel in Door County were made on the wrong weekend, we were desperate to find a place to stay. Every place we called was full, due to a marathon and the Packer game, we thought we were going to have to either sleep in the car or cancel our plans. We decided to just drive down the road and see if we could see a vacancy sign anywhere. It was getting late and we just wanted to find a place to sleep. We came upon Lipskis in Dykesville but he was full so he recommended Sunset Beach. We called and Steve had a room for us...for $118/night. We were prepared to pay more but Steve assured us that we were getting a clean room. My definition of clean is a far cry from his. This motel is so outdated - it just makes you feel icky when you walk in. The smell of the air freshener slaps you in the face, but it's probably better than the alternative. One of the beds had very obvious stains on the bedspread so we opted for the other bed. I pulled the bedding back to check for bed bugs and found numerous hairs which made it obvious that the bedding hadn't been washed. There is an apartment size refrigerator in the room, plus an additional smaller fridge on the dresser. This was next to the tiny microwave from the 70's which was next to the TV from the 80's. The stand in between the beds had an old stereo in it, at least from the 70's. The bathroom was tiny and the door didn't even close all the way due to poor installation. The walls were so thin, we could hear the guy in the next room clearing his throat and listening to his TV all night. For us, it was a place to stay out of pure desperation. The sad thing is, Steve has a gold-mine here. It's in a beautiful location, right in the water with a small beach and an area for lounging. He could invest a few thousand dollars and make simple improvements and it wold really help. Clean and repair the walls, update the furniture, and provide more comfortable beds because I'm pretty sure the ones he has are made of concrete. Steve is a very nice guy, but to charge us $118 a night was pure price gouging. However, I think all of the hotels are guilty of that on Packer weekends. If I had to do it over again, I think I would've slept in my car.
